This is not the only directory of its kind, it certainly wasn’t the first, and it hopefully won’t be the last. If this directory doesn’t fit your needs, maybe one of these will. And if they don’t, I would encourage you to start your own! I strongly believe we need more independently organized and opinionated lists, and would be happy to help in anyway I can.

  • Atlas of Type
    Atlas of Type is a directory of contemporary type design, with a focus on active, independent type designers and foundries who distribute their fonts through a dedicated web presence and/or though a small selection of reputable networks.
  • Font Licensing Mess
    An independent research project by María Ramos and Ana Moliz which serves as an initial overview of the current state of commercial font licences, based on structured and comparative information.
  • OMGLORD
    Curated list of type foundries by designer, Gabby Lord.
  • Type Foundries Archive [Defunct]
    No longer active, TFA was an online project to collect type foundries and build a link list of type foundries worldwide – independent or not, small or big, everyone. TFA was one of the original inspirations behind the Type Foundry Directory.
  • Type Foundry Index
    A list of independent type foundries easily filterable by trial font availability.
  • typefoundries.info
    A global collection of type foundries.
  • Typographica Census (2013)
    Ruxandra Duru combines historical events with a 2013 census and in‑depth analysis of contemporary foundries, offering insight into the sometimes obscure world of typeface drawing and font making.
  • Women leading foundries
    This database of women in leadership roles at independent type foundries aims to enhance their visibility and presence in the public sphere.
